Sometimes flawed in its storytelling, and I don't think the film needed the love story to bring human context. There's enough power within the true events of the film, and while I don't think it was completely successful, it is still an interesting film, shedding light on events that I had little knowledge about.
Having just come back from a trip to Mumbai India, and going to the Ghandi museum, I wanted to learn more about the partition. Mountbatten had an impossible job, & was dammed either way, with or without the partition. I think it's the strongest example I've seen that religion causes division & hatred, it's never unifying, like they want you to believe. Good to see the old pathe news reals at the end and seeing real footage from 1947, even tho it's harrowing. But nice to the see they didn't have a litter problem then, that seems to be a more modern problem.
It's ok enough in telling its story but it's top-down approach makes it hard to showcase why it's such a complex issue. As it is, it's mostly about map-painting and drawing borders and less about why that caused so much trouble and instability. I appreciate they tried to course correct with glimpses into common people's lives but the little time spent on it didn't help that much.
A fascinating and informative look at the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. Sadly, this brilliant historical drama is tarnished by an instance upon romance and a deplorable ending.
The movie sacrifieces some of the drama for the love story but not in a way that it becomes a distraction to the main story. It is still a very good movie with great cinematography.
