Love this movie. I am ashamed to admit it was made better by the fact that I totalllllyy forgot who won in real life so I was super on the edge of my seat.
If you were watching tennis, even casually aware, during this time you'll remember what you thought you knew. This is a great take on "the rest of the story." I remember my Mom telling me at that time that Connors had McEnroe's bad boy reputation not long earlier. To me, Connors seemed like the "good" American, and Mac was the ass. We all thought Borg was always "IceBorg". This movie helps understand all that.
Tense and thrilling on the court, but a little dull off it. Still, it's game, set and match to the actors portraying the two tennis rivals; they held my interest, despite my disinterest in the sport itself.
Always seemed on the verge of being an epic storytelling, but fell short in depth & execution in the end. Borg was fascinating and it would have been great to see more depth with McEnroe. The tennis match reenactments just weren't engaging enough and made me wish to just be able to watch the actual matches.
Actually I hate tennis. And this movie shows so much tennis, that I should actually hate this movie as well. But this movie was so thrilling, even though it shows so much tennis, it was so interesting, it kept me on the edge of my seat, that I have to give it a great rating. Both actors are incredible. I never saw a Shia LaBeouf movie I liked - this is the first where he actually shows what an incredible great actor he is, and that he has to offer so much more than the mediocre acting we know from the Transformers franchise. Sverrir Gudnason I have never seen before and I cannot understand why this guy doesn't have a lot of hollywood projects in the pipeline. The acting is superb, and Stellan Skarsgård is a great supporting actor. This movie is a great character study, showing how two characters who couldn't be more different are actually quite similar, as they have a similar struggles, even as children - where different paths led to different personalities. And they still struggle with the same problems, they have the same desires, the same pressures to deal with, the same problems. They deal with it differently on the outside, but they are the same on the inside. It is a well acted, totally thrilling story. It's worth watching, even though it is a nieche movie. Worth your time!
