I never think of myself as a fan of romance movies, but deep down, I really am. The trouble is, they are so rarely made properly. Most of the time what you get is the mainstream, chick flick, romcom crap. My version of romance is going to be more grounded, possibly odd, but nevertheless endearing. This... this is almost unwatchable. I was only twenty minutes in and realized I had made a huge mistake. I think the best place to start is with the story itself: this is all told out of sequence, so much that I didn't know where I was unless there was a clear reference to another part that had previously been shown. Building from that, this is not a movie, it's a collection of scenes, and to make matters worse, all we get are the awkward and bad moments from Peter and Vandy's relationship. This is another one of those stories where I think the writer/director was making a movie to process a real breakup. Onto the tone: I think the goal was to make a cute indie romcom with heavy moments, but the shifts in mood just don't work. Serious moments are undercut with humor that doesn't land. Funny moments try to make light of previously-viewed dark parts, leaving you with a sense of "yeah, that wasn't funny, and trying to make it such ruins both scenes." Now, even if the story were told in sequence, and Peter and Vandy weren't horribly toxic, the way this is shot would still make it pretty bad. The lighting is atrocious. The casting is all wrong - the exception being Weixler. For a love story, I never felt a moment of love between Peter and Vandy. Hell, the one minutes between Peter and Michelle felt closer to a true romance, just make the movie about them. I recommend staying far away from this. If you want a funny version of what this was trying to be, watch _The Boy Downstairs_ (2017). If you want a dark version, go with _Blue Valentine_ (2010).
