I enjoy documentaries. It's probably because I get to live another's life vicariously, which is probably also why I like film. What a circle of vicarious living I live in. I became aware of this documentary because Alicia Vikander is the voice of Ingrid's diaries and letters, and I'm on an alert for her professional progress. But I'm so glad to have discovered this It delved into the emotions as well as the facts, and you walk away feeling like you've learned something about life. Not just the glitter and the glamour of a Hollywood legend, but the passions and the mistakes of a real person. How do you rate a documentary? The filmmaker doesn't invite you to rate Ingrid's life, nor would that have value. I think a good documentary hold a mirror up to its audience as well as its subject. I've given the film an 8 (great) out of 10, because it successfully drew us into a life lived in wide frame and close up.
