This movie is so good, it doesn't even have to try... if Maggie Smith doesn't get an Oscar for her stella performace, then I will eat my hat. I cried, I laughed, I loved it. I give it 8.5/10
This was recommended to me. I really liked the story. Maggie Smith is excellently cast as the lady in the van and does a great job at making this character really hard to like. If anything, I'd say that they belaboured her situation a tad too long and could have leaped to her back story much sooner.
Alex Jennings wonderfully portrays Alan Bennett and Maggie Smith is brilliant as always, as the lady in the van. Bennett's own writing sparkles in this great adaptation of his memoir.
“I know how to bath myself. I won awards for that” Maggie Smith, an icon.
A great film, a heartwarming film about the versatility and peculiarities of people. Maggi Smith at her best. Great acting and you can tell that the role is close to her heart as she took it on for the third time and gave it the necessary depth in visual form. I particularly like the versatility of the characters and the contrasts in their relationship with the mother as well as the critical view of the use of her story. The complete failure of the social services or all social institutions is also portrayed very realistically. The fact that it is a true story makes it unique and gives some hope in an unfortunately very lonely world. It is not the best film I have ever seen but for the reasons mentioned above it is an 8/10
