Sometimes a small cast and a tiny budget are limitations. Other times they’re a filmmaker’s secret weapon. Isolation is a perfect example of the “less is more” philosophy. With only five principal characters, the film gives each one enough time to feel like a real person rather than cannon fodder. The strong performances make the increasingly desperate situation believable, and when things begin to unravel, you’re invested in everyone trapped on that lonely farm. Despite its modest budget, the movie creates an oppressive atmosphere through clever filmmaking instead of expensive effects. The rural setting becomes a prison, and the sense of isolation grows with every scene. It’s a slow burn that steadily tightens the screws until everything spins gloriously out of control. The creature effects are delightfully disgusting, delivering some wonderfully gruesome body horror without feeling excessive. Watching the situation spiral from uneasy to catastrophic is half the fun, and the film earns every escalation. It was an unexpected surprise. Proof that you don’t need a huge cast, lavish sets, or blockbuster money to make an effective creature feature. Strong acting, smart pacing, and a commitment to doing a few things exceptionally well are more than enough. A highly entertaining low-budget horror film that punches well above its weight.
I’ve been on a 2000s horror kick lately and this Irish creature feature definitely hit the spot. I was supposed to watch this on St. Patrick's Day but I didn't, so I figured it's been long enough it's now the time to watch this. This is a suitably grim and dreary science-experiment-gone-wrong that delivers thick tension and decent creature and body horror effects. The premise of this film sounds silly, like something you'd see on 80s creature features, but it's not as goofy and silly as expected. This thing is actually scary, suspenseful and gruesome enough to overcomes the utter silliness of its premise, thanks to its script and excellent performances. Love the rural farm setting and the eeriness it achieves. I think eerie farm generally make for a compelling setting for a horror film.
BEWARE do not eat food whilst watching this.
Pretty solid claustrophobic thriller. Believable story, with some great tension ramped up throughout. Awesome ending.
