2hrs 40mins... 160 whole minutes... Why? What an absolute bore, and a waste, 'Paint Your Wagon' turns into. Why did they make this so long? The plot needn't be that extended, the music doesn't carry it either. It has a few decent parts, but they are surrounded by excess fat. Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and Jean Seberg stopped me from hating this, I will say, because that trio are all solid despite the aforementioned. It's amusing, at first anyway, to see Marvin and Eastwood sing, as they aren't the types you'd expect to do so. I'm not saying they can sing per se, but it's comically positive - which is the film's intentional, after all. I wish it was shorter, you could easily take an hour off this and not lose anything. It's a right drag, unfortunately.

To start with, I do not really like musicals. And this is a good example why. Mediocre music starting without reason in the middle of the wilderness and then mediocre singing of idiotic songs and always the same coriographies. Well, that is though not the biggest issue I have with this movie. If you like musicals, just watch it for that reason. But I also am not what is called “woke”. I am rather in favour of being reasonable and confronting real life instead of living in a phantasy world. That said, this movie does just overdo it with women. The story seems to come directly out of the wet dreams of a teenager. There is one woman that is happy to be sold to the highest bidder and that is happy to be “together” with multiple men. Then there are a handful prostitutes that are happy to service 150 men who have not seen a woman for years… Just terrible. I do not understand how such a woman demeaning crap could ever be released as mainstream cinema. Clint, you are better than this BS.

It starts slow and I wasn't feeling it (Clint Eastwood singing? No.) but once the Mormons appear and the pace picks up. It gets really funny. I didn't feel the length. Lee Marvin's fully committed performance makes the movie.
