After the debacle that was Wrestlemania IX you'd think that SummerSlam '93 would be a great first step in the right direction. You would be wrong. Sadly this was barely a notch above that horrid Wrestlemania IX. There were some matches that had all the ingredients for a real top-notch performance but Michael Hickenbottom (aka "Shawn Michaels") has to be one of the most awful performers ever. He apparently can't sell a move without completely hyper-exaggerating it: and this wasn't him trying to show up Hulk Hogan but Curt "Mister Perfect" Hennig. What a great match!...on paper. The real thing - in the ring - was, bluntly, absolutely awful. In addition to some of the lousiest matches you could see on a WWF pay-per-view, you had Bobby Heenan doing his blatant "cheering" for the heel. Jesse Ventura was absolute classic when he made the little inferences every so often advocating for the heel, but Heenan's blatant screaming in favor of whichever "heel" was in the ring at the moment, well, frankly it was just unamusing and very distracting. The dud (match) that was IRS vs Sean Waltman was hard to sit through (in fact, I typed most of this during that very match) but pretty much this entire event was almost as awful as the preceding Wrestlemania IX. All in all, just a very bad follow-up to a very VERY bad Wrestlemania IX. Oh and PS: When Nikolai Volkoff used to sing the Russian national anthem (and tick everyone off), it was funny: some off-key, tone-deaf Japanese dude trying to accomplish the same thing by "singing the Japanese national anthem" (and demanding that everyone stand) is not the same, and it's not even mildly amusing.
