This film was really boring, and I didn't fully understand what was going on. Didn't make a lot of sense.

Boring. Confusing. Nothing happens. The main character is from Delaware. I hate Delaware.

Ahh, the classic low budget horror flick with the confusing storyline... In this particular film, Ashton Holmes sort of reminds me of Jesse Eisenberg. Although I haven't seen any of his other films, he doesn't seem like a bad actor. I'm surprised that his career didn't take off like Emily Blunt's. i don't typically watch horrors flicks, so my opinion could be flawed, with that said, it's worth a watch.

Wind Chill is a small, simple film, and quite a bit more pleasant to watch than it might seem at first. It is not a great horror movie, nor a particularly polished one, but it has something that works: the cold, the road, the isolation and the feeling that the journey is slowly going wrong. Sometimes placing two characters in a hostile space is enough for suspense to start breathing. The film is entertaining and easy to watch. Its premise is very basic: a young woman shares a car with a stranger in order to get home, the trip becomes complicated, snow covers everything and what first seemed like an uncomfortable situation turns into something much more unsettling. It does not need much more than that. When Wind Chill relies on that initial discomfort, on the distrust between the two leads and on the threat of the landscape, it works quite well. Emily Blunt is very good, as she almost always is. She has a natural presence that lifts the film even when the script does not give her very much. She does not need big speeches to convey exhaustion, fear or anger. Even in a modest film, she makes us follow her with interest. And yes, she is beautiful too, but what matters is that even then she already had that mix of intelligence, fragility and strength that would later make her a much bigger actress. Ashton Holmes also works as the strange companion, and for a good stretch the film knows how to play with our doubts about him. That is one of its strongest elements: not everything depends on ghosts or scares, but on the discomfort of travelling with someone who seems to know too much, who never quite inspires trust and who turns the car into a space that feels less and less safe. The problem is that Wind Chill does not always maintain that level. It has effective moments, a fairly strong cold atmosphere and some unsettling images, but it also carries an uneven script. The supernatural side is not always as strong as the starting situation, and some twists feel more functional than truly surprising. The film seems better when it suggests than when it explains. Even so, it is very watchable. It has a contained running time, good atmosphere, a very strong lead and a fairly restrained way of approaching horror. It does not look for excess or spectacle, but for a drier, more austere kind of unease. It may not leave a deep mark, but as a supernatural road thriller it works. You have a good time, you feel the cold, and above all you confirm once again that Emily Blunt improves almost any film she appears in.
