I watched a little on tv once back in childhood, and now finally got around to watching it fully, and It was a good film, and the script was funny, and the cast were great, specially Richard E Grant.
This one definitely isn’t my usual type of thing, but I still came away with a weird appreciation for it. The biggest standout is just how raw and authentic it feels. The cinematography, direction, and characters, all of it’s handled with this really grounded honesty. Like, yeah, it might be a little romanticized, but it still feels like someone’s real life at its core. Maybe even too real at points. The pacing was a bit too slow for my personal taste, and it’s not the most engaging film moment to moment. But I get the appeal, it’s got that dry, melancholy humour, that “tragic but hilarious” vibe, and characters that are definitely memorable. I don’t love it, but I do respect it. There’s something special here for the right kind of viewer, if you like slow, character-driven, dark comedies with that British edge, this is basically a cult classic for a reason
If this was made now, it would be called Me and Withnail..
This movie is what Bottom would be if it wasn't funny and without endearing characters. I've read and heard this is one of the best British comedies and that it is a must watch... Well, I watched it and I didn't even smile once. Maybe I'm missing something, maybe I'm not high-brow enough but I don't see where this movie got it's praise.
A movie I wavered on for a while but ultimately came around to liking quite a bit. It's the sort of thing where it takes time to find myself on the same wavelength, but once I find its groove it gets under my skin. Some truly funny moments and a really lovely downbeat ending.
