Okay so I hate Westerns, they bore me to death but this pleasantly surprised me. It's a bit slow to start off with but pay attention-it's crucial to the storyline. Just as you think the movie is predictable and you've got it all figured out, it's plot twist after plot twist. The last half an hour I just can't fault at all. Brilliantly written, brilliant casting, brilliant acting. Sharon Stone and Russell Crowe were brilliant, Leo's part wasn't THAT relevant, although he looks amazing and is very charming! The only Western I've liked, this is one for true film appreciators! Would certainly recommend.

A pulpy take on the Western that doesn’t feel like Tarantino in any way. It’s really well shot and pretty entertaining, but not without dead air and a general lack of character development. The acting’s really solid, Gene Hackman steals the movie. 6/10

These days everyone gets all excited when there’s a strong woman in a movie. Like with Wonder Woman. They act like it has never been seen. Here Sharon Stone is solid and bad ass. As a woman out for vengeance against the man that killed her father. A quick drawer tournament where you can challenge anyone. Might just be her answer. The supporting cast is fantastic as well. Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio before they became big names. Are especially fine. Just some goofy cartoonish violence held back the film from getting the good reviews it deserved. At least I think that’s why Siskel & Ebert didn’t like it. Otherwise I always found it almost impossible not to like but some how critics found a way.

The Quick and the Dead is an entertaining western carried by style, momentum, and a strong cast, but the movie never fully overcomes how cartoonish it can feel. Gene Hackman is excellent as the town’s tyrannical ruler, but the supporting cast is packed with familiar faces who never reach their potential. The exaggerated tone and comic-book approach make the film fun, though also difficult to take seriously for long stretches.
