Dust Bunny reunites Bryan Fuller and Mads Mikkelsen for a very unexpected project. This movie has such a distinctive style that really captivated me at times. Characters are zany and off-kilter. I can't exactly figure out the right way to describe them other than they seem like they almost belong to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The setting, costumes, and environments have such a crafted and unique look to them as well. It's very idiosyncratic, and I love it. There are some very unique needle drops as well. Everything in this production has been intentionally and meticulously crafted to bring you into this world, one that feels lived in and developed over years. A choir singing a catchy hymn as people pass donation plates in the pews, a shadow emerging from the glowing mist, characters blending into floral wallpaper, a little girl riding a metal hippo to navigate her apartment. I can name scene after scene that really tickled my brain that just loves beautiful cinematography and unique style. Blocking, movement, sound design, lighting, it all feels top tier here. Sophie Sloan holds her own against Mads, and Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalchian are quirky and charming. Yet, all of this is in service to such an odd project. I'm not entirely sure what Bryan Fuller wanted this story to be about, and it seems like he waffles. It very much feels like a kid's movie, oriented for an audience of kids. Because at the heart of it, this story is about a monstrous dust bunny. No matter how you interpret it, whether it is a metaphor of some kind or some actual magical monster, it remains the central focal point of the movie. I just couldn't get over that to be honest. And yes, it is right there in the title. However, that dust bunny just feels so out of place in a movie where everything else feels so finely tuned. The CGI is not great, and it is noticeable compared to the rest of the cinematography. Thematically, it makes no sense to be honest, no matter how I try to interpret it. It also just makes the narrative unsatisfying for me. Granted, like I said, this is a kid's movie. It does not need to serve some greater purpose. I just wish I liked it more because I actually really adore so much else in this movie. It feels like a quintessential classic, harkening back to movies of yesteryear that transported you into these unique worlds. It just is missing the story to really make it one.

I like this movie. Mads Mikkelsen is excellent, as are the rest of the cast. One of the main strength of the movie is its Gothic- or Wes Anderson-like visuals that make the movie feel like the modern horror-fairytale that it is. Even though some say that the movie is for children, I believe that it can be traumatising for children under 16, so be aware. What I particularly like is that this special visual style just works for this movie, which it does not always do in other movies. Enjoy the ride.

Dust Bunny is underwhelming. Cute concept, but the story is messy and drags, with weak character development and little tension or stakes. Charming visuals can't save a forgettable, uninspired plot.

It's always a pleasant surprise when a Bryan Fuller project doesn't fail due to creative differences. Because what he always manages to do is capture his entire creative energy on screen. In the child-friendly monster horror film "Dust Bunny," this is evident in the colorful and playful aesthetic. The characters are all quirky in the best sense of the word, and the chemistry between lead actor Mads Mikkelsen and convincing child actress Sophie Sloan is just right. There are a few flaws in the rather lackluster CGI monster, but since the visuals are otherwise rock solid, this can be easily forgiven. Overall, "Dust Bunny" is certainly a good introductory film for the horror genre. With this in mind, give it a strong recommendation.
