Industry season 4 looks nothing like the show it started as. The London bank setting is gone, the original cast of characters has been whittled down to just two, and what started as a group of young upcomers trying to buck the pressure of the wealthy and carve their own path has morphed into something that almost feels like the opposite. While finance jargon is continuously rattled off, at times feeling almost like the show is trying too hard, this season suddenly has a healthy dose of politics, espionage, and power brokering. There are plot threads that involve shadowy organizations and implied assassins. In a lot of ways, it feels like the show has jumped the shark. The season is filled with plot contrivances. Established characters make their last appearance on screen in pitiful ways. In a lot of ways, it is a mess. Yet. Yet. There is something oddly captivating about this chaos. Despite all the craziness, despite how different the show really is this season, it also keeps its two main characters, Harper and Yasmin, as its core foundation. Their character trajectories might seem unrealistic, but yet they feel authentic and true. This show might jump from headline to headline, trying to remain topical, but it also knows that these two characters, who constantly float in and out of each other's orbits, act as foils, two sides of the same coin. Both bitter towards their parents, confident that they deserve more, willing to grab it themselves instead of waiting for it to fall in their lap. This season is really just a showcase of how that energy can lead to drastically different results depending on how it is channeled. There was a lot I was unsure about in the finale, but seeing where these characters end up felt oddly rewarding, knowing that even though the showrunners are clearly making up the plot as they go along, there seems to be this clear arc for these characters that is thought through. And hell, when you can ignore the absurdity and this show is hitting on all its cylinders, it can be unlike anything else on TV. It can turn into a magnetic gothic ghost story one episode and shift into a look into the rise of fascism in the next. It may have its flaws, but there really is nothing else like Industry on TV right now.

While a little rough in the middle, and unfocused at the beginning, this season had a great ending. It's clear that this series' strength is when its protagonists and antagonists have their backs against the wall and are put in uncomfortable positions.
