Après une enfance triste au pensionnat de Lowood, la jeune orpheline Jane Eyre est engagée à sa majorité comme gouvernante de la petite Adèle chez le riche Mr Rochester. Edward Rochester, homme ombrageux errant dans son immense demeure, ne tarde pas à être sensible aux charmes de Jane qui, à son tour, se sent attirée par ce personnage énigmatique. C'est bientôt une folle passion, jusqu'au moment où un lourd secret empêche ce mariage...

A rather gently flowing, understated production that gets under the skin. The central performance is quite dour and Jane-like, for want of a better description, but when merriment or ecstasy take her over is brightened considerably. Mostly studio-bound for the main drama, it takes us out and about in chaise or mail coach. The story is fuller than most and aside from some dodgy makeup for a burned face is rather finely done. I still am left wondering if she recovered her possessions when she left the coach too precipitously on her departure from Thornfield Hall. I think possibly not.
