Claudette Colbert émigre aux Etats-Unis avec sa famille alors qu'elle n'a que sept ans. Après avoir étudié les beaux-arts à New York, elle donne des cours de français. Elle commence par hasard une carrière au théâtre et connaît, en 1926, son premier succès à Broadway avec The Barker.
