Have the TV remote handy. There's the urge to skip through a lot of this one as it's once cliché after another. If you don't fast forward, you can practice your ventriloquism skills as it's so predictable that it's possible to speak along with the characters. About as boring as a movie gets.

The Ones Below is a solid, if fairly predictable, thriller. I found myself anticipating the story beats well in advance, largely because the film avoids forcing shock twists or implausible turns purely for the sake of suspense. Instead, it leans on a grounded narrative and the performances of its four main cast members to carry the tension. I watched this primarily for Laura Birn, shortly after finally finishing a Foundation marathon last week. I’ve always enjoyed revisiting an actor’s earlier work once they deliver that standout performance that turns them into a household name. In that sense, this film is particularly interesting: Laura Birn appears in a co-lead role in an English-language production, which is a nice change from the supporting roles and non-English films that make up much of her earlier work.

That cat of theirs is a fucking liability.

This English version of Gaslight is dark, to be sure, yet not nearly as clever as it thinks it is.
