[CPH:DOX '24] Midwife Kirsi, one of the two protagonists of this film, describes childbirth as "an experience that can define you forever, from a physical and psychological point of view." Addressing some issues that are not usually talked about, in that unknown environment that is the moment of birth, the film shows three home births and two hospital births through the eyes of midwife Kirsi and Anna-Riitta, who acts as doula, a professional not trained in obstetrics but who accompanies patients before, during and after childbirth. They doesn't identify with any gender and they are especially focused on non-binary and transgender patients. Karoliina Gröndahl's camera, which is controlled by herself as in her short films, approaches the tired faces of the mothers, always placing itself close, as a way of including us in the birth ritual, transmitting the stress and joy of the birth moment. Although it sometimes only notes some of the themes it proposes, it's a fascinating representation of that contradictory feeling that is revealed at birth and an interesting reflection on the need to regain control over our bodies.
