Comments about a predictable plot for a film released in 1976 can't really be taken seriously. The film successfully achieves a claustrophobic, creepy feel, typical of Polanski's paranoid themes. Great film.
The original title of the film is Le locataire.
Often cited as a classic, I found the film to be overwrought and unconvincing. Probably didn't help that I watched the film, one man's descent into madness, whilst I had the flu! Still, one to rent rather than buy, in my opinion. Get it? Rent? Oh well!
The film is wild ride into
insanity
. When you understand that this is
an expression of Polanski's poor treatment by Parisians
it becomes even more vivid.
The closing loop creates a horrifying loss of one's identity, along with the mysterious ties to Egyptian mythology.
I really enjoyed this movie - not from an artistic perspective, it was just a fun weird movie
