Set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, this season chronicles the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. King Viserys I Targaryen names his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, as heir to the Iron Throne, breaking tradition and igniting tensions within the realm. The court becomes divided as Queen Alicent Hightower, Viserys’s second wife, promotes her son Aegon’s claim to the throne. Political intrigue, shifting alliances, and personal betrayals set the stage for a looming conflict that threatens to tear the Targaryen dynasty apart.
The Heirs of the Dragon
Viserys hosts a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. Rhaenyra welcomes her uncle Daemon back to the Red Keep.
The Rogue Prince
Princess Rhaenyra dives deep into the prophecies about House Targaryen while confronting a realm that resists the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne, and Prince Daemon, embittered over being passed over as the heir to Westeros, prepares to go to war.
Second of His Name
Daemon and the Sea Snake battle the Crabfeeder. The realm celebrates Aegon's second nameday. Rhaenyra faces the prospect of marriage.
King of the Narrow Sea
Daemon returns to court after the successful completion of the battle. Princess Rhaenyra must deal with potential suitors in order to keep her line of succession.
We Light the Way
Daemon visits his wife in the Vale. Viserys and Rhaenyra broker agreements with the Valeryons. Alicent seeks the truth about the princess.
The Princess and the Queen
Ten years later. Rhaenyra navigates Alicent's continued speculation about her children, while Daemon and Laena weigh an offer in Pentos.
Driftmark
As the families gather on Driftmark for a funeral, Viserys calls for an end to infighting and Alicent demands justice.
The Lord of the Tides
Six years later. With the Driftmark succession suddenly critical, Rhaenyra attempts to strike a bargain with Rhaenys.
The Green Council
While Alicent enlists Cole and Aemond to track down Aegon, Otto gathers the great houses of Westeros to affirm their allegiance.
The Black Queen
Mourning a tragic death, Rhaenyra tries to hold the kingdom together and Daemon prepares for war.

Rhaenyra Targaryen: (opening narration) As the first century of the Targaryen dynasty came to a close, the health of the Old King, Jaehaerys, was failing. In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength, with ten adult dragons under its yoke. No power in the world could stand against it. King Jaehaerys reigned over nearly sixty years of peace and prosperity, but tragedy had claimed both his sons, leaving his succession in doubt. So, in the year 101, the Old King called a Great Council to choose an heir. Over a thousand lords made the journey to Harrenhal. Fourteen succession claims were heard, but only two were truly considered. Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the king's eldest descendant, and her younger cousin, Prince Viserys Targaryen, the king's eldest male descendant.
The ending of GoT made me not even excited for this show. I didn't even watch it when it came out because I wasn't aware it was being shown. How wrong I was to ignore this. It is so good and if it ended with this series, I think it has been better than GoT. Great acting, great Story and even better visuals. It has given me hope for everything as I was so let down with the GoT ending. I just didn't want to see anything that would remind me of it. As one of the book readers I was very pleasantly surprised with the changes and think almost all of them improved things. I guess I see it as what actually happened rather than a history telling of what happened as with the books. Viserys was 10/10 and I could have watched a show just on him and his awful time as being King. It was very poetic watching him. I am so hyped now for this show. It feels nice to feel that way about it again. I know it will be awhile for the next series and then another wait for that... But I am ok with it and if they can do what they did with series one I will be a happy man.
The time jumps between episodes are way too often and they skip too much time. It is like watching a dramatization of a history documentary, but for a fictional world. It fails to be anything. It is better to watch the last season of GoT than this xD
It's an excellent first season. Much better than disastrous last GoT season. It looks good. Dialogues are a highlight. Most actors are excellent. King Viserys, young and adult Alicent and young Rhaenyra are wonderful. I like that it feels like GoT but it's not just a mere copy. It's awesome entertainment for an adult viewership. Is it all perfect then? No: * Frequent jumps in time take away from the immersion. Especially the big jump mid-season was a bit disorienting. I also feel that I'm deprived of all the stories that remain untold. * I like young Rhaenyra much better than Emma D'Arcy. * I still don't know what this story is about. I think GoT's endgame was much easier to understand: gain power - defend humankind. I feel that HotD lacks this sort of readily comprehensible objectives. Is this show predominantly a story about power struggles for the throne? Will future seasons present an external enemy just like GoT had north of the border? Is it maybe a history book? A history in which many different fractions will sit on the throne and the story is compressed by having lots of time jumps? Will the question whether Rhaenyra will defend her claim may become irrelevant in the grand scheme of things? Will the show maybe tell the story of lots of generations and Rhaenyra's story will be ancient history in the last season? Or is this show some sort of fantasy *Buddenbrooks*? The story of the downfall of a family. Remember: in GoT the dragons are gone and the Targaryens are virtually exiled. Too early to say what this show wants to be.
