I liked the animations and visual style of the season, although the "ageing" seemed quite odd. The characters have quite some depth. What annoyed me was the
constant talk about their principles.
All in all not excellent but not bad either.

I liked it. I enjoy back story / origin story and world building. Would normally rate this an 8 but I gave it +1 for not making the black guys gay... that's Netflix's usual MO

In short, very well done. But first, a summary: an old guard of superheroes sees their service coming to an end and are focused on bringing up a new generation of young superheroes to take their place. Yet, there are stark differences between the two groups. The original heroes, particularly their leader Sheldon, continue to cling to the Code, which dictates their actions and decisions. It is not for them to get involved in politics or shaping the world. And it is most certainly not for them to carry out execution. Their role is to facilitate a better world by bringing criminals to justice ALIVE. Meanwhile, the new heroes are facing more ruthless enemies than ever before, who have no qualms about killing, and are soon fearing for their own lives. At the center of this conflict is Sheldon, who's unwavering loyalty to the Code has distanced him from his own children and threatens to do the same with his wife. Yet, it was Sheldon's unwavering confidence that led to the creation of the original heroes in the first place. I normally don't care for interwoven flashback stories but I really didn't mind it so much in this show. While I thought the origin story was just okay, it did do an excellent job setting up the relationships of 4 of the main characters. And unlike Invincible, which I also just watched, I totally bought the motivations of the villian due to the groundwork laid in these flashbacks. And while the killing vs. not-killing question has been explored many times, placing it in the context of a changing guard made it feel refreshing. It was also refreshing to see the development and relationships of the characters front-and-center; the action truly takes back seat though there is still plenty of it. One thing I found odd was a sprinkling of political jargon seemingly thrown in for no reason. The focus of this story is largely personal. So although the settings are ripe for commentary (Great Depression and present day), simply throwing in comments about Nazis, or rantings against Marxists, or arguments about Capitalism without any real exploration is pointless. I'm definitely not one to complain about a show because it allows for some political discussion. In fact, I think it's very important to cover these issues. But it has to serve SOME purpose. It's like they just threw in some buzzwords for effect. Nevertheless, this is a great start to the series and I look forward to tuning in for the second season.
