I was very excited about this because Shin Sung-rok finally gets to be the hero in a drama, but I have to be honest: it's kind of a hot mess. I loved it so much at the beginning, and I had fun throughout most of it, but _Perfume_ didn't exactly live up to my expectations. I also hoped for some strong positive messages considering the problematic aspects of this story and the way it's told, but the drama didn't really deliver those in the way I wanted either. TL;DR: Not really worth watching unless you're a Shin Sung-rok fan. But there's a long list of things about _Perfume_ that rubbed me the wrong way, so without further ado:
- This drama treats suicide way too casually. - The horror, doom, and destruction soundtrack that plays whenever skinny Min Ye-rin turns into Min Jae-hee? Not funny. - The mention that Min Jae-hee is fat through no fault of her own, but as an unavoidable side effect of her pregnancy. Is this supposed to make Min Jae-hee more acceptable or something? Because that's offensive. - Seo E Do spends most of the drama with Min Ye-rin. Most of the bonding and loving is with her and not Jae-hee. - Min Jae-hee really only gets one super cute scene with Seo E Do, which is when her husband pushes her in the clothing store and E Do catches her by the waist (I swooned). - Was E Do being fat as a child the only way he could understand 40-year old Min Jae-hee?? Again: offensive. - The fashion show theme at the end where E Do makes loose clothes that'll look good on all figures. This seems to suggest that plus size women look good only in loose, comfortable clothing, which....no. - We don't ever see Min Jae-hee coming to value herself. She likes herself as Min Ye-rin, yes, but she shies away from the mirror when she's fat even in the last few episodes. She finally learns to be more confident in herself in the very last episode when she spends a year away from E Do, but this all happens off-screen. - Let's be real: the very premise of a fat woman turning skinny is not a good movie or drama idea. You shouldn't have to turn skinny to figure out that you're worth the world and back.
