From the plot alone, it looks like a direct "lift" / adaptation of the US series, which leads to some interesting phenomenological problems, i.e. Japan doesn't have the same Mental Health structures, the DSM-V isn't something they use to classify people, and quite often people are shunned or left by their families when they can't gain independence. Even mild conditions like Depression are considered shameful, personal responsibilities, sic. and stigma, phobias, and prejudices, as well as complexes and neurotic reactions are common. Also, conversely, because shame is a strong isolator and motivator, it also becomes a motivating / censorious force, much like political correctness in the US. It could be a springboard for 'enlightened' viewers, but it's probably not going to be popular in doing so. That said, a fair number of people "slip through" the cracks of society without a diagnosis, and perhaps once the show gets going, they can introduce more iconic japanese tropes and japanese-stereotypical medical dilemmas or cultural changes to the format. The idiomatic structure for cultural stereotypes already exists for people that have Autistic traits in Japanese culture, but it is a shallow representation. i.e. a larger percentage of hikkikomori (NEET, or unemployed youth) are often people with undiagnosed mental health problems, and their health / existence is shameful to families, preventing medical or social intervention. It's going to be interesting working out if the JP audience is phobic to bad TV, or the actor does a good enough job to convey autism to an audience that has had little exposure to ASD without stereotyped behaviours and idiomatic quirks before. Also, the personal background for Shaun / "shindo" as a runaway in the US, will likely have to be 'calibrated' for a Japanese audience, but it could still work given how insular and Shame-oriented a family could be in Japan. I'll find a way to see the show to see if they have a similar budget or scale.
