> History of a Salaryman is the most underrated drama of all time and a LEGENDARY show … If this show was released in this decade it would be a bigger hit than CLOY and Vincenzo . It has all the elements of these shows corruption, legal fights , dark humor except for action PLOT ------ In this drama there were like 5 major "wars" that kept the story going. By wars i mean major events, so this drama was not only about what happened 3 months but broadly the story can be divided into two parts 1. **Corporate Espionage** , Anti-Hero(s) trying to get into corporate world , 1 Annoying Bratty FL and angelic FL . Although it starts with a murder mystery the first Half is focused on these 4 Leads meeting and dunking each other due to FATE. 2. **Corporate Corruption , Injustice** ,
Inheritance Theft
. This is where the 2 Second Leads starts becoming annoying despite having 50% of show time as their story is more of jealousy , flirting and comedy. While the 2 Main Leads will go through HELL and HIGH together and develop a strong bond with very very slight romance . I liked the first part of the show ; where every character seems righteous or at-least reasonably justified in their actions but the in the latter half the Second leads almost 180* change in characters . One overdoes his villainous agenda almost questioning his initial purpose
Dead father who committed suicide since he was unable to climb the corporate. He actively tramples every individual that he comes across making many victims like his father
; while the other one becomes just a side character to spark jealousy in the other 3 leads and nonsensical romance with the duchebag . I skipped every scene b/w the two second leads in the second and this is the only drawback of the story. CAST ------ The four leads play amazing roles (atleast in the first half) . Jung Ryeo Won and Lee Bum Soo, my two favorite were hilarious and acted well together. Lee Bum Soo ( Yoo Bang) cracked me up as the confident and witty Yoo Bang, I like the fact that he looked for a way to over come through out the drama. You might already know him from a serious role in GIANT but he really daebak in this Jung Ryeo Won (Baek Yeo Chi)has a serious cursing problem . She starts as a typical bratty entitled Heiress that we encounter as a support character but from there her character only develops positively . She has to be one of the well written female leads .
Although there was little to no romance b/w Bang and Yeochi they are the best couple in the show ; they grow on you pretty fast that you will hate the other two. Their chemisty is off charts and the after preview snippet are hilarious. I like this one the most : https://youtu.be/0gSjzRr83-Q?list=PLShqORWiDquPTAY0gBfef0VgXRtiQMkbA&t=1226
Jung Gyu Woon (Choi Hang-woo) had me totally conflicted with his hot/cold character Hang Woo at the beginning but at the end. Do I hate him? Yes .
He didn't deserve to go scot-free . He reasoning was always wrong ; his misunderstanding caused lot of drama and he places blames on wrong person instead of introspecting what wrong he has done. He puts his lover to risk by ignoring her advice multiple times and he still get to keep her ?
Hong Soo Hyun was fun as the smart and beautiful Woo Hee. But as Yoo Bang says
Hang-woo has turned the bright and happy person into a sad and miserable girl that just loves him for no real reason and I was disappointed that their entire relationship added up to 'they (adorably) (hilariously) drove each other nuts for ages and now they're in love.'
Kim Seo Hyung as Secretary Mo is no joke. She excelled in making me hate the character and I appreciate her for it. That laughter is something else. All of the other actors were also good. VERDICT --------- You'll laugh a lot, you might cry and you will definitely want to choke a few characters but hey, it'll be a fun ride. This is probably something I will rewatch someday and will skip all scenes of Hang-woo again . The story had a lot of components for example friendship, love, business, success of a poor man, an arrogant guy falling for a sweet girl, it was hilarious, it was a great melodrama but most important attraction for the show is my fiery haired goddess, who can cuss in 3 different languages, it so funny and Yoo Bang . Overall History of a Salaryman is the most innovative show ( a decade older) to come along in a while. It might be a change from your typical preference but if you give it a chance you’ll be in for 22 hours of nonstop entertainment!
