Crusading journalist John Diamond returns from a successful assignment in Africa to find that he is being followed and his phone is tapped. His wife wants to divorce him for adultery leaving him fearing for his career. But who are they?

John Diamond heading, by train, for TV interview when his lawyer Mark Terson appears, panicked by what he has been told by a government official. Problems mount when Terson accidentally kills an armed man.

Lawyer Simon Brenner-Jones offers John Diamond the chance to buy £1,000 shares, in Topanga mineral rights, for just £110 but declines. His wife is kidnapped and is told she will let free for his silence but declines.

Terson and Diamond disagree in how to deal Joyce's kidnapping. Diamond attempts to get publicity but Terson agrees to pay Brenner-Jones and keep Diamond quiet. However Terson is shot dead during the exchange.

Diamond, his wife and American journalist Judy Marshall hide out in Croydon and discovers that the police were not called to Mark Terson's murder. Joyce believes he was involved and gives him two names; Commander Todd and McKinley.

Diamond walks into a trap set by Commander Todd who outlines how Tobanga will be used as political base for the white race to maintain power in Africa and any story will never be published. The new Topanga government is overthrown.
