The source material is super, I recommend the audiobook you will be gripped. This is a crazy rushed adaptation, skimming over almost all characters such that any reveals are confusing and fall a bit flat. Seems a shame as such good material it’s based off, and SOME good actors (others not so much) It did the job but instead just feels like a rushed adaptation without the punch of the book. 6/10

Never heard of it before but gave it a chance simply because BBC and Netflix have some good 'murder' series. They both also have a lot of below-average content, and this adds to the list. I don't see my childhood, teen, or adult self liking this. The mystery and story play on repeat for most of the episodes, so much so, I gave up caring about anything and everything. While the story introduces and carries on reintroducing itself, the chemistry, acting, and dialogue, feel completely forced. Artifical and empty, I'm guessing the book is a million times better, as it apparently always is.

This adaptation sucked. I truly don't understand the point of adapting a story if you're going to change almost every major event, change the characters, change their relationships, change their motives, change their eureka moments... The book was a major success for a _reason_. The book was so much fun because we were literally right there alongside Pip, solving the mystery _with_ her. We had all the information and clues in our grasp to figure things out even before she did. The buildup in the book was 10/10. Here, though? so many of the crucial threads that build up to the conclusion were completely omitted from the narrative, and the timeline of clues and events was completely jumbled up, leaving the solution to the mystery hollow and empty. Things just happen when they do, and realizations just occur because of plot reasons. _We_ are not really part of any investigation. The series sacrificed relationships, sacrificed Pip's character, and even sacrificed the Wrong Doers in favor of a disjointed narrative that relies on a series of events Just Happening, relies on information basically just being fed to Pip, and relies on flashy lighting and ominous music. I half watched the show _just_ to see how it got itself out of the hole it dug itself through its surgery of the source material, and the conclusion was... they didn't. The patient died. I will not be watching the second season when it comes out.

I am an absolute lover of the books that this is based on so when I heard they were doing a show I was both excited and skeptical. This was honestly an amazing adaptation with gripping scenes and astounding acting done by all the cast. Despite this being aimed at Young adults it does not pull punches with its content and is willing to get into the nitty gritty of this high school murder. Every episode was just better than the last and now I can't wait for season 2!
