Really a great animation series. A mix of funk, hip-hop, style, sword-fights, coolness and the path of a warrior and his facing problems during the walk on becoming the biggest sword master of all time...

This show takes the samurai formula, cranks it to eleven, and drenches it in pure style. The animation is stunning, even by today’s standards, and for 2007 it’s genuinely mind-blowing. It’s gritty, moody, and atmospheric, with a unique sci-fi, steampunk-infused take on feudal Japan that I’ve never seen done like this before. Every frame drips with personality, and the fight choreography is insane, some of the best I’ve seen. The pacing is fast and aggressive, more like a movie broken into episodes than a traditional show. It doesn’t linger too long on any one thing, which works for what it’s trying to do, though it does mean the emotional beats don’t hit quite as hard as they could have. Still, the characters are developed enough for the revenge story to feel meaningful and give the action weight. Afro himself is a compelling, stoic protagonist, and Ninja Ninja adds a chaotic energy that keeps things dynamic. What really elevates it though is the tone and atmosphere. The hip-hop-infused soundtrack meshes perfectly with the samurai setting, similar to how Samurai Champloo blends styles, and I think this mashup might even be my favorite version of that vibe. There are also subtle philosophical layers beneath the spectacle, with biblical references like the Tower of Babel and themes about obsession, legacy, and power. It’s never heavy-handed, but if you look for it, there’s more going on beneath the surface than just flashy sword fights. Overall, Afro Samurai is a short, intense burst of pure style. It’s not trying to be a deeply emotional or complex narrative, it’s about delivering some of the most stylish, brutal action imaginable, and on that front, it completely succeeds. If you want a show that’s as visually striking as it is fun, this is essential viewing.

The only thing is, it’s a pretty simple story, and some episodes don’t quite hit the emotional mark they could. But overall, it’s great!

As a child, Afro Samurai has to watch as his father, an honorable warrior, is killed in a duel by the merciless killer Justice. Justice robs the dead man of the legendary Number One headband, which grants its wearer godlike powers. Instead of killing Afro as well, Justice taunts the boy and haughtily gives him his own number two headband. With action-packed fight scenes and an unusual drawing style, "Afro Samurai" tries to cover up the fact that its story is actually boring enough to fall asleep to. The anime cost 1 million dollar per episode, which is an interesting selling point, but most of it probably went to Samuel L. Jackson as a gad for the voice acting, it seems.
