Most sites have this at 8.5. Honestly since this is an American app, the ratings just show how lazy we are as a people that either don't want to read sub titles or lack interest in any other culture than our own hodge podge of everyone else. I'll admit I thought it would take me forever to watch 40 almost hour long episodes, but within the first three I was hooked. There's just so much going on and you stay to form your own opinions about who's doing what. Very classic styling of the characters much like Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Just twists in the plot that have you wondering which is what. Just fantastically done. Also it was interesting to see the Chinese view of Japan's occupation, as almost all British, French and American movies about the area at that time focus on what happened to their people in the Chinese cities rather than the effect on the Chinese. It's definitely more an Asian film, as western films almost always have the happy ending whether it's believable or not. There's some happy and some not so happy endings. I was really wishing they had done maybe 3-5 more episodes to explain what happens to the sisters a little more before between 39 and 40. But it is quite lengthy, so that's neither here nor there. A must watch if you like intrigue, sibling rivalry, family ties, all crossed into a war time story. Really quite impressed by the whole thing.
