Looks like this show aired during a period when I had moved to a new city and didn't have cable yet, so I'd never heard of this show nor was I even aware of Zach Galifanakis until about 2006, when I rented the Purple Onion special from Netflix (dvds by mail). Most of the show's run has been uploaded to youtube, but the playlist seems to be missing the first two episodes and about 9 others. The show itself was the basic industry promotion show common on VH1 and E! channels at the time--shows meant to promote new albums, TV shows, and movies in a talk show with a live audience format. It probably was developed with a title first, so it wasn't created _for Zach to host_, they probably had an open call and Zach auditioned and was chosen to host, thus they inserted his name into the title. I can imagine that, although Zach was rightly cast for talent and his comedic irreverence, a VH1 network executive weasel probably demanded they NOT use his last name in the title for fear it would scare viewers if they saw it and tried to read it. Seriously, they don't even list his last name in the opening graphics. Since the first two episodes are lost, I've started with the third, and I can immediately see some signature Galifanakian comedy. For example, for the cold open, Zach is brought out to the audience while playing a grand piano and wearing a huge wig with the whole rig on a moveable stage being pushed by a female body builder, who then strikes some poses and flexes her muscles to Zach's flourishing piano music. Zach then did a little of his non-sequitur humor for the monologue. "Another dream of mine is that the Spanish channel will have English subtitles....so I can finally figure out what I've been laughing at this whole time." While Zach isn't bad as a host, you can tell that he's a bit uncomfortable because he carries, and refers to a clipboard with bits, notes, and questions for the guests. In all, even with the clipboard, it is interesting seeing Zach so young and see him consciously adapting his weirdness to fit the "talk show host" suit. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes that are available and see how it evolves.
