Incredibly underrated. Great tension building flick! Saw it in theaters and loved it right away, it's a shame it didn't get the love it deserved. So many horror movies are so copy paste and remakes and reboots that I love movies when they try something different or a-typical. It is refreshing.
Even though I'm not a big fan of movies that feature the occult or voodoo or "swamp" horror for that matter, this was a creepy, moody surprise. Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands are pretty much a two-woman show, and John Hurt does some decent gasping and grunting in an effort to communicate his knowledge of the evil that lurks within the old mansion. There are some surprising twists and turns but it's a mostly low key affair. There isn't a lot of action, but the characters keep things interesting and there are some scary images and good editing that keep you on edge.
Great all around; acting, story, pace, atmosphere. Watching a 2nd time is as fun if not more than the 1st.
the movie is not good and not bad. It has jump scares in it, with would make the movie a 3of10. BUT (!) the endling is so good, that it raises the bar. 5/10 for a average movie with a superb ending !
