Enjoyed the visual experience but the plot is not easy to follow because of the constant scene shifting.
Hey, thanks for the schizophrenia 👍
Mononoke's new film promised a lot, but the truth is that it has been a disappointment. Yes, the art and production are very elaborate, even impressive at first, but they end up being excessive and visually exhausting. The aesthetics overshadow the story, and there comes a point where the saturation is more of a hindrance than a pleasure. The plot is unnecessarily complex, to the point of being confusing. The surrealism gains ground as it progresses, and far from captivating, it ends up disconnecting. Instead of delving into a fascinating mystery, you get lost in visual nonsense that seems more intent on impressing than telling a solid story. Fortunately, you don't need to know the character of Mononoke to enjoy it: the film organically introduces you to his world and the enigmatic nature of this protagonist, who functions more as an observer and catalyst than as a traditional hero. The most curious thing is that at times it feels like you are watching a performance of classical Japanese theatre, such as Nō or Kabuki. That solemnity, that slow and ceremonial pace, reinforce the feeling of being in front of a very particular work, closer to an artistic experience than to conventional entertainment.
If you liked the series, you'll like the movie. Beautiful animation with frequent cuts and a wonderful mature story about Edo politics and concubines which might be hard to relate for some but I'd recommend it to everyone i can.
