Weird how in 1995 the filmmakers accurately predicted the world-wide plague of 2021, but couldn't figure out that January 17 would be a Sunday.
To think The Matrix came only 4 years after this. A world of difference.
This movie is like a steaming pile of garbage that smells like roses. It's got that classic '90s B-movie feel, plus, you know, Keanu Reeves. It takes place in an interesting future version of Earth, and the worldbuilding could have been pretty cool, but it comes off as cheesy. The pacing is bad, the dialogue is bad, but man, if this isn't entertaining! Its greatest shortcoming is that it's too serious; there's little to no humour to be found in this movie. If it was truly aware of how silly it was (and played along), it would be even more fun. This is a great movie to invite some friends over, and just have fun watching this crappy movie.
An hour and four minutes in, Johnny Mnemonic shouts "what the eff is going on?!" and I couldn't agree more. Like some weird fever dream of b-movie ideas and a strangely well-done version of haptic VR, this thing is actually a shit-show from the get-go. Terrible acting as you'd expect from early-ish Keanu and a supporting cast of "not quite Shakespearean thespians", I echo other comments here that it is quite remarkable that The Matrix arrives just 4 years after this. Take Total Recall, Demolition Man and a solid handful of Fifth Element and this is NOT what you get! It could only hope to be half as good as any single one of those films. 5/10 2/5
This movie looks like the First Iteration of The Matrix that cam 4 years afterwards. Very similar character arcs. Also Keanu plays the main "Messiah" character.
