I like the scene where Sasha mouths along with Emotions by Brenda Lee.
Cute, awkward and endearing, Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person is an offbeat, bloodsucking coming-of-age comedy that is wholesome and comforting in its tale of stilted adolesence and maturity. Suprisingly warm considering the creatures central to the feature, this was right up my ally and I'll now be adding Sara Montpetit's filmography to my ever inflating backlog.
Like the ugly bat pup that grew up to be a graceful vampire, I wish this had more teeth but it does have some bite at the end. :bat: After Falcon Lake and Humanist Vampire, this is now a Sara Monpetit fan account.
Mordant. This is basically a fairly simple drama with a vampirism skin over it but I really loved the complexities they created between our two main characters. They're going through the same coming of age, depression, trauma, mental health... stuff but in different ways and how it meets for the two characters is the most unique and interesting aspect of the movie. The characters are layered, the interactions are even more layered, lots of well done awkward moments and the performances are memorable. I like how they handled the vampire lore, it was just the right amount. It has a tiny bit of *What We Do in the Shadows* DNA at the beginning but the comedy is totally different and the tone is much darker especially with the heavy themes. It had comedy at the beginning but then it gets more and more serious, sad and heartbreaking until there wasn't any comedy to be found and at times I wasn't sure what was intended as comedy and what wasn't. It feels genre bending but I wish the comedy was out of this movie because it does really well with the dramatic beats alone. It's also extremely predictable, the movie never surprised me and that's why I don't really like the ending, I expected something unexpected and a bigger emotional punch but it never happened. Cleaver what they did with the poutine, the most delicious emblematic dish in Québec being lethal to vampires... that's so cruel!
It's far from perfect, but there's much to love here. I'm always a sucker for unconventional twists on what are usually pretty tired film ideas (which most vampire stories tend to be at this point). This was a welcome surprise.
