There were so many performers and their sets so truncated that few truly got to shine. And so most of them either played to broad stereotypes to try and get laughs or their jokes didn’t have enough time to breath to get more than chuckles. Some sets feel pretty insular or locked in on an assumed universal gay experience that hemmed white, thin, well off, and/or conventionally attractive. Trixie Mattel at least lampooned it. It’s part of why Sam Jay was the best of the night; she absolutely killed it, comfortable in the timeframe and nailed the pacing, and her material was honest and frank. Other standouts were Patti Harrison, Mae Martin, Tig Notaro, Marsha Warfield, Gina Yashere, and Solomon Georgio. Billy was not a great host. It’s 2022 so naturally he’s got to wrong hands about the Oscar slap, and he’s gotta plug his romcom which came off terribly self centered. But the fact that romcom ended up landing with a thud was the funniest part of his set. It’s hard to escape the feeling of rainbow washing for Netflix, even when they do mention Chappelle, but overall it’s pretty alright. Nothing… stand out.
