Like when you can't decide if you should wear shorts or a suit so you wear both at the same time and people think you look silly. This film had two alpha ideas but wasn't big enough for both of them. A historical movie about Africans who were stolen from their homeland and sent to France where they were forced to fight in the trenches of World War I would've been a welcome lesson. Or the story of a protective father in a war whose son is promoted and outranks him could've made for a subtle and introspective look at parenting and fatherhood. But sadly only the surface of both these concepts is scratched, which leaves us itching for something more satisfying.
