I get just as annoyed as the next person at the overly sanitized depiction of teenagers in movies. However, much like _Euphoria_, I think this overcorrects. Every character’s written like a sex deprived college student that’s constantly doing drugs, drinking, smoking, swearing or doing other edgy stuff. I just can’t buy into that, for me it doesn’t ring true to the life of a teenager. On top of that the acting’s fairly weak (Leo Fitzpatrick feels miscast; Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny are clearly the most talented of the bunch) and technically it’s not that remarkable. It feels grounded and I like the handheld feel, but there’s not much of a vision. On top of that the sound mixing can be muddy and inconsistent. Yet, despite those pretty major gripes, the importance of the story deserves to be recognized. All of the emotional beats related to the HIV storyline are the only points where it doesn’t feel like this is trying too hard. I just wish it’d focused way more on Sevigny’s character and her relationship with Telly after the diagnosis, to me that’s way more interesting than all the hangout stuff. Not recommended. 3.5/10
One of the most unpleasant films I’ve ever seen. But who said film is about what is pleasant? If it forces you to look at yourself or the world in a different way, then it succeeded. However, this is still not something I would ever want to see again.
Everything is raw and impactful. Young people seek discovery and pleasure through abusive, extreme and self-destructive means. It's a bleak, visceral, explicit and impulsive portrait, where excess becomes the only motivation amid a sense of meaninglessness.
