Some of the dialogue is questionable, sure. But as a sports movie it’s actually quite well made. The surf scenes feel dramatic, and they succeeded in making the water scary. Doesn’t hurt that’s it’s filmed in Hawaii. I learned a lot about surfing. Kate Bosworth is great, and the supporting cast did enough to not detract from the main storyline. Oh, and the soundtrack from 2002 rocks. Don’t go into it thinking it’s a “rom-com” and you’ll walk away surprisingly satisfied.
>"I want a girl to be on the cover of Surf magazine. It would be great if that girl were me, but any girl would do. " Surfer girls from early 2000's is a vibe! I like how this was not over the top and was a pretty grounded story. Someone said that you need to have a good sound system when watching this and it cracked me up because the soundtrack is pretty great (P.O.D. anyone?!).
I didn't expect much because even the synopsis sounds horribly cheesy, but I happen to really like **Kate Bosworth**, so I gave it a try and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good and _grounded_ it is! Sure, I could have done without the romantic subplot but luckily it wasn't too overbearing and the focus remained on the surfing and the power that comes from women supporting women. Really enjoyed this one and the soundtrack was also great :ok_hand_tone1: And for anyone who liked this movie and wonders what could have happened if the characters were queer, check out the book "Into the Blue" by **Pene Henson** 😉
>"Do you remember that Superman episode.. where he was, like, spinning around the Earth backwards trying to rotate it in the other direction, to bring back time?" Coincidentally, I'm noticing these Superman references in the things I'm watching lately. _Mindhunter_ and now this. Maybe it's telling me something about the upcoming _Justice League_ (2017) film. Anyway, I caught _Blue Crush_ on Flix channel. I mistaken this for the Jessica Alba/Paul Walker one, _Into the Blue_ (2005). Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez, both of _The Fast and the Furious_ fame, would later star in these separate surfer films. This is basically a chick flick for surfer chicks; a film of its time identified by its fun soundtrack including "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama and the rap rock song "Youth of the Nation" by P.O.D. The bikinis and crashing of the waves remind me of the beach and summer time. While the sound design may be nice to hear on a sound system, I do like some of the slow motion and underwater angled shots, which sometimes seemed to be repeated. If this was made today, we'd get more cinematic overhead drone shots like in the new _Baywatch_ (2017). A Xbox logo can be spotted midway through, and there even featured an actual Xbox game that the girls play called _Transworld Surf_ from Atari which was pretty good for its time. Story-wise, it's your typical boy meets girl romance while girl reaches for her dream goal. It's kept simple, nothing to be desired by; less action than the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze surfer, _Point Break_ (1991), and more along the lines of the Disney original film, _Johnny Tsunami_ (1999). But seeing this makes me want to go surfing. I've always wanted to try surfing. If I lived in California or Hawaii, I'd hang at the beach all the time. Now I gotta see _Into the Blue_.
