[Sheffield '25] The camera pans around the family home from a position on the roof and lingers on some old curtains that block out any light from outside, conveying the feeling of a haunted place, burdened by the weight of the ghosts that inhabit it. It is this ability to convey sensations that distances it from a simple portrait of the self-destructive attitude of an alcoholic mother and becomes a clarifying vision of how addictions affect their environment. It speaks with sensitivity and intensity of the helplessness, responsibilities, and guilt in a family facing illness.
