maybe if you'd seen the opera before this would be good? it had potential but was a bit weird for me
A "low seven" for me. I get that they thought they would draw in more people by having a rather trite contemporary music academy "wrapper", with the actual Magic Flute being in a separate magical world. But I came for the actual Mozart parts and the larger story doesn't really add much. There was a moment when I thought they were going to give us a useful introduction to the Masonic parts of the opera but they just nodded at it and moved on. The actual Magic Flute performances themselves when they came were good enough to make me feel I hadn't wasted my time. I would still argue that you'd be better off just watching an actual Magic Flute production. Maybe even get yourself a Criterion Collection subscription and watch Ingmar Bergman's version?
It was pretty, it was fresh and very nice to watch. I liked it! I haven’t seen the actual play and I’m not an expert in opera but the most famous scene where mom intimidates princess Pamina is very well made.
