A charming if not extraordinary Japanese comedy. Generally well-acted, with a unique pacing, and elevated some by its pathos. There's something of Coetzee's Michael K in Nomi's striving, and it's definitely endearing. You also can't help but feel that the film is meant at least partially as a metaphor for the Japanese comedy industry, and one wonders whether Matsumoto had been feeling unappreciated or exhausted...
