_Silent Night, Deadly Night_ is a mediocre and rather bizarre remake of the ‘80s cult horror film. The story follows a serial killer named Billy who hears a voice directing him to kill people who he senses are evil. It’s clearly ripping off _Dexter_; with the whole serial killer who kills killers thing and the Dark Passenger that guides him in his kills. However, the writer is weak; offering little as to who or what the voice is and how it knowns what it knows. And there’s no setup to Billy’s kills, which makes them rather empty and meaningless. While it delivers a few thrills and tries to do some interesting things with the material, overall _Silent Night, Deadly Night_ is a poorly made film that doesn’t work.
The remake of the 1984 film “Silent Night, Deadly Night” does not achieve the anarchic quality of the original movie. Although some characters and story elements have been retained, the new version is a completely different kind of film. This starts with the main character, Billy. In the original, he was a deeply disturbed guy who freaks out at the sight of Santa Claus and sees only naughty people everywhere. The new Billy seems a bit more collected. He is actually more of a mixture of Dexter and Venom (!?) - a kind of antihero who sends really evil people to hell. You could certainly accuse the reboot of taking itself a little too seriously, which detracts from the fun factor. And especially at the beginning, the film takes a little too long to get going. But once Billy gets started, it somehow works. In terms of violence, it does have its moments, but it is also not extremely violent. Anyway, by the time the song “Santa's Watching” from the original was reused, I was even having some fun. All in all, the new “Silent Night, Deadly Night” is a solid Christmas horror flick that's worth giving a chance. Above all, it's an interesting approach to a remake, even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel. I give it a mild recommendation.
You know. I didn’t hate it. It was a fun watch. Killer killing people who deserve to be killed. A good direction for horror/slasher flicks. The kills were enjoyable and original. Can’t wait to see if there is going to be another one. It reminds me a bit of Dexter with a twist.
I'm disappointed this is a remake but they at least do something different with it past the first act, the Nazi Santas were the best thing in the movie. Some nice bloody kills and I liked the needle drops throughout. The car sequence at the beginning is very similar to the original but more gentle to say the least. This version of Billy doesn't really bring anything new that we didn't get in the original and I still prefer Robert Brian Wilson both as an actor and the character in that movie. I like the *Venom* inner voice thing going on and it turns into
*Dexter* in the third act which was unexpected. The Snatcher was a highlight, wish we got a bit more of him. I don't like the new sci-fi concept they add in the second half for how this thing goes from person to person, it's lazy and convenient.
Not terrible, not essential. A decent holiday slasher you throw on in December when you’ve already watched the classics and want something new that’s a little naughty but not unforgettable.
