God, it was so painful to watch till the end. If you watch it, you'll get a sample of what the Hell is
As generic as it's title! The first act had so much potencial with Russell Crowe basically filming *The Pope's Exorcist* and weird stuff happens on set, add a bit of meta and this could've been something special. Second act hits and still no meta in sight, it just turns into the most generic cliché movie we've had all year. A real shame. Russell Crowe's guilt ridden character is actually layered and interesting in that first act but they do nothing with him after that, he basically becomes mindless and so does the script. The father wanting to get his daughter's love back aspect was also interesting. The director character was very effective, he says some real mean stuff and knows how to get under your skin, really elevated Crowe's character. Sam Worthington was there for some reason, maybe he lost a bet or something? About 30 minutes too long for the schlock that it is. Horrible acting from Ryan Simpkins in the last act. Laughable ending.
Like making a devil's food cake by dumping ingredients in a bowl and then abandoning it, but expecting it to come out as anything better than half-baked. Also, as an alcoholic with 13+ years sobriety and a gay daughter, I found the treatment of addiction and lesbian relationships to be very gratuitous and voyeuristic.
That was a waste of time!
Please, I just want to see a movie about exorcisms, nothing more. I don't want to know how bad the church is or the LGTBI goodness. I just want to watch a movie about exorcisms.
