The same restlessness and anguish of “Boy Meets Girl” here find a much more personal style and a way more modern presentation. Denis Lavant manages to channel the right energy for this metropolitan tragedy in a somewhat Nick Cave-reminiscent look. The cold feel of the city is conveyed through dramatic shadows combined with a blueish/greyish color palette with occasional bold colors to set the contrast. The silly thriller that sets the premise is not the point: again, we are asked to sync our hearts to the confessions of two youngsters with different needs and aspirations as they keep pulling closer and moving apart. That’s where most of the tension comes from; the movie is well aware that the Wilkinson heist is close to ridiculous. Recommended only if you like excessively stylized films where it’s all about the mood.
Lovely weirdness from Leos Carax. Some of the extreme close ups and focus pulls really draws the viewer to ask why the Director is doing what he's doing. Is it a play on how love between 2 people isn't what it used to be? Or is the bizarre virus in the film a more allegorical one for all the plagues sweeping society? Either way, Lavant and Binoche are superb as usual. A puzzling but brilliant film.
