In a bucolic area on the coast of Middle of Nowhere, France, Catherine Deneuve's grandson wants to run off and join the jihad in Syria. When we see how boring their life is and how emotionless the people are, we end up hoping he makes it. _Farewell to the Night_ (and to the hope of a good title) is a film that aims for 'stark' , but only gets as far as 'cold'. Téchiné takes a dramatic situation and sucks all the drama from it until all that's left is a bland flan of a leftover plan.
