Dark, like really dark. Not just in tone, but in lighting; sometimes I didn't know what I was looking at. This is a bleak crime drama about drugs, violence, and poverty. Nothing glamorous or triumphant here, don't expect to feel good by the end. The story follows three characters - four, if you include the cop, but he didn't bring much to the story - a pair of meth dealers, and our lead, Earl. Ultimately, this is about broken people in bad situations doing whatever they have to, in order to live. Not fun at all, but very well made. Highly recommended for anyone who likes ultra-heavy crime dramas. My initial draw to this was Qualley, and she was great. She's nude in this, and unlike in _The Substance_ (2024), she doesn't have fake boobs here.
A little lacking in character backstory perhaps, but this is still a rough, tough bruiser of a movie. Not perfect then, but the journey to Donneybrook is still worth taking.
Jamie Bell has come a long way since Billy Elliot.
