It feels so different rewatching this and being older than demi was while filming. They went through so much so young, so much i couldn't imagine handling at my current age let alone as a teenager. Demi was always an inspiration for me, but this documentary always solidifies that fact even more.
I grew up watching Demi Lovato in Camp Rock and Sonny with a Chance, and this documentary was a punch in the stomach. I knew she had had problems, obviously. But seeing her speak directly to the camera about
her eating disorders, the self-harm, the addiction, the abuse she suffered... it's something else. There are moments where her voice breaks and you break with her. She talks about her time at Disney. That world where they sell you as a perfect product while inside you're falling apart. Seeing the photos of her as a teenager, so smiley, knowing what was really happening... it hurts. It also has moments of hope. You see her in the studio recording, laughing with her team, talking about therapy and recovery. It feels like she was in a good place when it was filmed (this was before the 2018 overdose, which adds another layer of sadness when rewatching it now).
