I love how the film frames the protagonists' tragedy around the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Many critics have theorized that just like Gothic horror fiction was born from the British Civil Wars and the fall of aristocracy; the revival of Asian horror cinema in the early 2000s was a result of the Asian financial crisis. That makes the premise of the film very meta. Unfortunately, the script is not as tight as its premise. The film resorts to cheap jumpscares, drawn-out uneventful scenes and repetitive crises in order to raise suspense. At least all the actresses give very good performances.
