Catching up before it's leaving Shudder. When a British professor ties his success to his wife's black magic, he destroys her spell to disastrous results. This film completely took me by surprise. _Burn, Witch, Burn_ aka _Night of the Eagle_ is an evocative horror thriller about witchcraft set at a university. It incorporates some elements that's surprisingly still occuring to this day. With a fairly slow start, it keeps getting better as it goes along and builds into a strong climax. The story is much more unique than I expected. It tries to battle witchcraft with science and that works great in the film. The effects and editing are impressive. I absolutely love the warning intro with the spooky narrator voice giving the audience some kind of protection from evil forces that may effect us during the film. That's a very nice touch. The performances are terrific and I love seeing shirtless Peter Wyngarde.

whew, the waterside setting. the swap from the shot of Flora setting fire to the cards immediately into the cat going APESHIT back at the house fucking killed me. also really into the eagle induced mayhem, wasn't sure if this was going to live up to Night of the Eagle as one of the titles but nah there was some of that too.😭😭😭 Tansy is such a legend and def deserves a better partner than Norman. love can be complicated (i mean, he is kinda cute and hopefully will be a better companion post-film though it obvs shouldn't have taken all of That) so i do get it, but god. one of my favorites of the whole season tbh.

Pretty ok for its age. The premise is interesting, but I'm a bit disappointed though. I expected the wife to be a true witch, versed in obscure arts,that actively improved her husband's life and, once he realized, would help again. But no, she's just a housewife playing with protection charms and juju found in Jamaica. And clearly the housewife function is more important than the witch, as she repeatedly says she would die for him because she loves him so much, and that he has so much to bring to the world while she's nothing. Probably standard love stuff at the time, but damn cringe today. The opposition between Norman's super Cartesian views, and what comes after is well played and paced, but yeah, it probably doesn't go far enough in the weird stuff. Night of the eagle is a weird title as it just references one event in the movie. The only one needing special effects and it's actually pretty passable. The question Flora asks of Norman remains open. Was it witchcraft, was it hypnosis ? There are no traces of the eagle event afterward, so it probably was all in his head. And it's the only event that couldn't be explained rationally. The house did burn however, coincidence ?
