Perhaps the standards have changed since 1984, but watching this in 2022, I don't feel the impact it perhaps once had. I haven't read the book either, so maybe I am missing something. Jaqueline Bisset is strong, but Albert Finney is unconvincing as a drunk. None of the poison of alchoholism makes its way to the forefront of his effort. Look to Barfly or Leaving Las Vegas for a more realistic (and upsetting) portrayal.
