This is not an easy film, and it doesn’t try to be. From the very beginning, it is intense, heavy, and emotionally demanding. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t comment on how well the movie adapts the story—these impressions are based solely on the film itself. Even without knowing the source material, it can feel overwhelming. What stands out most is how the film shifts between harsh reality and almost surreal moments. Memories, trauma, guilt, and the supernatural blend together until it’s sometimes hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Watching it, I often felt slightly lost. Some elements are introduced strongly but then quietly disappear or are barely mentioned again. This can be frustrating, especially since the film is long and requires constant attention. The performances carry the movie. Even in quieter scenes, there is a constant undercurrent of tension and sorrow. Some sequences are genuinely hard to watch. At the same time, the length and heavy symbolism can make it hard to fully connect, leaving you more observing than experiencing at times. Overall, Beloved is a film I respect more than I enjoyed. I’m glad I watched it, but I probably won’t revisit it soon. It demands a lot from the viewer and doesn’t always provide clarity or a satisfying conclusion. Still, it is a serious, powerful experience that lingers in a quiet, unsettling way—even if some parts leave you feeling worn out.
