A tragic story of love and death based... this movie is beautiful and sad and deserves another watch by me. A seaman kills his wife based on untruths and is cursed to the sea unless he can find a woman who would give up her life for him.... the measure of love is how much you are willing to give up for it....... something to ponder..... a great recommended watch.

We liked it, it conveys a tragic tone, Ava Gardner at her best.

Kind of a bananas movie--it's mythological in content and scope, in a way that never really came together for me (as is the case with most mythology.) I don't think James Mason is at his best when he plays doomed, brooding romantic leads and the screenplay here plods along at length with a lot of subplots that don't really work. Ava Gardner is often lovely and brings a carnality to the proceedings that's lost amidst all the general British sterility, and the cinematography was beautiful (albeit in need of a restoration.)
